The novel follows Judith Dunbar, a girl of fourteen at the start of the book, over the ten years of her life that encompass boarding school and the Second World War, which brings a huge amount of tragedy both to Judith and to those she holds dear. Slightly doubtful, I began to read this book despite longing to read some new ones I had bought – and was instantly hooked. It was lent to me by my nan, who has read a lot of Pilcher’s works before but claimed this as her favourite and insisted I would like it. REVIEW: As you may have noticed, there has been quite a gap between this review and my previous one – namely because this book is 1016 pages long which, although not the longest book I have ever read, did make it more time-consuming than I had imagined! The 158-Pound Marriage is as lean and concentrated as a mine shaft. "One of the most remarkable things about John Irving's first three novels, viewed from the vantage of The World According to Garp, is that they can be read as one extended fictional enterprise. Irving's cool eye spares none of his foursome, he writes with genuine compassion for the sexual tests and illusions they perpetrate on each other but the sexual intrigue between them demonstrates how even the kind can be ungenerous, and even the well-intentioned, destructive. "Irving looks cunningly beyond the eye-catching gyrations of the mating dance to the morning-after implications." -The Washington Post The darker vision and sexual ambiguities of this erotic, ironic tale about a ménage a quatre in a New England university town foreshadow those of The World According to Garp but this very trim and precise novel is a marked departure from the author's generally robust, boisterous style. Set in Ireland in 1858, seven years after the potato famine, The Wonder tells the story of an English nurse who is hired to spend two weeks observing an eleven-year old girl, who, her parents claim, has not eaten for months. I spoke to Donoghue about the second of these novels, her 2016 book, The Wonder. Since then, Donoghue has gone on to write a further three novels for adults as well as a YA fiction series. Room became an Oscar-winning film and gained an Academy Award nomination for its script. She went on to write the screenplay adaptation, also titled Room (2015), directed by Lenny Abraham. Emma Donoghue is an award-winning author, best known as the writer of the novel Room (2010), which was shortlisted for the Man Booker.
